Be Dyed-In-The-Wool
I’m a thesaurus junkie. I just recently got a new computer and one of the first things I searched for on Word? You got it…the thesaurus. So while searching for a replacement for a word, it popped up with ‘dyed-in-the-wool’. When I first read it, I thought it sounded like a cool 60’s term for making tie-dye….not so much.
I have never heard this term before in my entire life- but it is now one that I’m pretty sure I’m gonna use for the rest of my life (kinda like how I now use the word ‘ya’ll’ more times in one day that probably legal in certain states.)
As fun as it is to learn new words (flippant= joking, adroit=skill) let’s set aside our wool-dying here for a sec a move on…
It says in Psalm 37:5 “commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass”.
It’s really easy to read by this scripture, thank the Lord, and then move on to something new…but in all reality, this is one of those big ones.
When David wrote this psalm, he said that we needed to commit our way to the Lord and to also trust Him. ‘Sooo, no big deal’ your thinking, right? Wrong. It’s easy to be committed to something but not trust it. For example, it’s easy to get committed and marry someone…but it is a whole other level to actually trust them. To believe that they will keep their word and stay faithful to you till death do you part.
It’s easy to be committed to God- to read your Bible everyday, pray, go to church- things followers of Christ are supposed to do for a deeper relationship with Him. But it’s easy to be committed to God and not actually trust Him. We can read His word till our eyes are dry and pray and declare life over any situation until we are out of breath…but what good are any of those prayers if we don’t actually believe in the Man we are praying to?
It says in God’s Word that He not a man that He should lie nor the son of man that He should repent- but still, we act as if He is only picking ‘His favorite Christians to bless’ so we’d better keep a safe distance so we don’t get hurt. And before long, we are treating God like a game at Chuck. E Cheese. Staying committed to finishing the game we started- but not expecting much other than a few rub off tattoos and some gum as a consolation prize for at least trying…
We can’t be committed with no hope in His word. Where will that ever get us? He says that He is faithful to ALL who call upon His name and not only believe Him…but TRUST Him and know that what He says is true! If He says He’s going to give you a house- by golly, you’d better believe Him! If He says He is going to give you a job- why wouldn’t you take Him at His word? I mean, let’s take a quick ride throughout history here, people: how many times has God made promises that He hasn’t kept one way or another? Think about it…God hasn’t stopped working miracles. People have simply stopped trusting Him.
It’s no mistake that David said that we needed to commit and trust and it would be done for us, because it is only when we commit ALL of our ways to Him and fully believe what He said is true, that we will ever be in a place to receive His promises toward us.
‘So Sarah, what does that whole ‘dying fabric’ thing have to do with this?’ You might be asking…
‘Dyed-in-the wool’ is a term for being wholeheartedly devoted to a person, political party, cause, ETC. I don’t know about you, but I want to be completely dyed-in-the-wool to God, trusting always in His Word. So why not give it a shot? Trust Him and get dyed…you might just come up a cool new color.
