Can you Rest?

And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the LORD Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels.
II Thessalonians 1:7
Are you trusting in Jesus for your rest? In a world full of trouble, people often try to find rest in many different ways. They feel that if they can forget their problems, that will give them rest, so they turn to drinking and drugs trying to "forget" their troubles. Some believe that if they stop caring about others and themselves then their troubles will magically disapear. One of the problems with this way of thinking is that it doesn't do anything about the problem itself. 2 Thessalonians 1:6 says, "Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;". One day, God is going to deal with those that trouble you in a final way, but notice that God's judgment is NOT what brings rest. We are promised that we will have rest, but it is because Jesus will be revealed from heaven...in other words, our rest comes because of Jesus. Other things that bring you a temporary rest will bring other problems with them, but Jesus wants to take all of your problems and give you rest. Not in some distant future, but right now. The rest that we are promised in our verse is a permanent rest because Jesus is coming back and we will be changed to be like Him. He offers us rest now, Matthew 11:28-29 says, "28Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls." We come to Jesus many times with our burdens and cares and give them to Him, but we think that this is supposed to be temporary and we take them back soon. Once we give these things to Jesus, we are supposed to leave them with Him. You will not be able to rest if you are carrying your burden. Give it to Him once and for all so that you can experience true freedom in Christ.
