The fear of nuclear power.
Just this past week the Washington Post announced that “President Barack Obama says he is “not reconciled” to the idea of Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon within a year.” He says that the U.S. government is moving the complete opposite direction. “A nuclear-armed Iran would likely trigger an arms race in the already volatile Mideast and said that would be “a recipie for potential disaster.”" He has been quoted saying that “Iran must not be a nuclear power, although he conceded that the challenge ahead is formidable.”
Since the introduction of the first nuclear power bomb in 1945 the fear of nuclear power has been growing. The potential that at any moment a missile containing a nuclear warhead could be launched into our back yard is a very real fear that is dealt with differently by everyone.
So what exactly does a nuclear bomb do? When a nuclear bomb explodes is starts with a very bright flash that is followed by a fireball. The heat from the explosion is so powerful that it can be felt for miles away, and the fireball is so hot that it rises into the air drawing up all the earth that is under the blast shattering it into tiny particles. As it rises the fireball heats the air which then rushes outwards as a wave. The closer the wave is to the blast the stronger that it is, allowing it to destroy buildings, landmarks, vehicles, etc. Also during the blast gamma rays which create radioactive particles travel outwards and the mushroom cloud that forms carries radioactive material high into the air. The fall out is tremendous.
If all we have is the hope that our Leaders will not set off these bombs. If all we have is ourselves to protect and watch over us. If all we have is the hopelessness in realizing that it is out of our control, then we are lost in our own fear.
Fortunately we serve a God that has much more power than a nuclear warhead.
- In Genesis 1:1 God creates the Heavens and the earth
- In Genesis 6 God floods the whole world
- In Genesis 19 God destroys Sodom and Gomorrah with burning sulfur
- In Exodus 7 God brings the plagues on Egypt
- In Exodus 13 God splits the waters in the sea to allow Israel to cross over
- In Exodus 33 God shows some of His glory to Moses
- In Joshua 6 God crumbles Jericho
- In Joshua 10 God stops the sun
- In 2 Kings 4 God provides
- In 2 Kings 7 God terrifies an army
- In 2 Chronicles God raised up a nation and destroyed another one
- In Matthew 1 God provided a Savior for mankind
- Someday He will come again!
This is not by any means a complete list of all that God has done. It is simply a quick snap shot of some of His acts, His works, His power and might. We do not serve a weakling. We serve a mighty God who bows to nothing, but everything bows to Him. No matter how powerful, how strong, how in control we think we are. We are still just men, and God is God, and we can trust in His love.
