But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. Matthew 6:6

Prayer is one of the most powerful tools available to Christians today. You and I are called on to pray for the lost, sick, hurting, and hopeless. We are told to pray for our leaders (whether you agree with them or not) and for eachother. Are we not supposed to pray in public? No, that is not what Jesus is saying. Matthew 6:5 says, "5And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward." Our prayers are not for self promotion. We don't need to purposefully word our prayers in such a way that people are impressed with our prayers. Matthew 6:7 says, "7But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking." Simply repeating words and calling it a prayer does not make it a prayer. Prayer is our opportunity to talk to the God of all the universe, not an opportunity to be seen as spiritual. This is why Jesus told us to "enter into thy closet". God is more concerned about our faithfulness to pray and what we pray for rather than how we sound when we pray. You don't have to literally go into a closet to pray, but when you pray, shut out the world. Don't worry about who is or isn't listening, God is listening. Talk to Him. You can tell Him anything, of course there are some things that you should probably discuss with Him in private. We should never diminish the importance of prayer. Have you prayed today?
