Our Church is Now Speaking Louder Than Before.
News Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 18, 2009 Local Church Hosts Community Cookout Apostolic Church of Sun Prairie will host a free cookout for the Sun Prairie Community on Sunday, June 28 beginning at noon. This meal is the first of many monthly meals that the church will host. The next two meals will be held on July 26 and August 30 at noon. To kick off the week of the Fourth of July, the meal menu will include cookout and picnic style food. Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin will supply all the food for the meal. Reverend Basil Wilber, pastor of the church, said, "We’re thankful that we can rely on Second Harvest so that we can put on these meals for the community." Second Harvest Foodbank is part of a nation-wide network called Feeding America. According to the Second Harvest Foodbank Web site, many food manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors and retailers donate surplus and unsaleable grocery products to Second Harvest. Second Harvest, in turn, distributes the food to food pantries, shelters, and meal sites in the Southeast Wisconsin area. Food drives are also a primary method of keeping Second Harvest Foodbank ready and able to distribute food to needy areas. Mona Adams Winston, Second Harvest director, said "Only through partnerships like this one, can Second Harvest feed people, which is the mission of Second Harvest." Jeanette Wilber, the wife of Reverend Wilber used to run a food pantry ministry, supported by Second Harvest, at her former church in Appleton, WI. "We’re excited about adding this ministry to our church’s many ministries. We are hoping to help 50 people at least. Hopefully, that number will grow as we continue to provide this monthly meal." Pastor Wilber said the church is committed to helping the community, and this is the first step in that commitment. "This free meal is for the hurting, the hungry, and the homeless of the community. But even if people don’t come for food, they should come for fellowship."
