Pondering the footsteps of Jesus
So tonight I had a thought that I could not shake and had to ponder for awhile. It is a thought that holds no real importance in life itself, but more of interest. I am sure that if one could convince that it was true, and if it actually was, it would hold a great insight on the footsteps of Christ. However, since it cannot be proven and can only rest in my mind I am left to ponder. It happened in a chapel time at our cooperate staff training as I listened to our speaker for the weekend Rob Haslam.
He was speaking on the passsage in John 4 as Jesus was crossed over Samaria. Jesus sat at the well as they discussed how Jacob had dug this well so many years age. Thus, I pondered…Had Jesus been here before? Did He stand on this ground as Jacob put his foot to the shovel? It is true that God has been there, and Jesus is God, therefore He was there. But as He talked with this Samaritan woman, could He look back on years before or was that hidden from Him?
If He could not look back then it would not matter. But if He could He could see Jacob digging the well. He could see the years that passed and the things that would have happened at that well. The vows that were said, the fights that were fought and the thousands of livestock that were watered. He could hear the sound of the caravan, the beat of the drums, and the heart of countless men and women who travelled this well beaten trail.
I have always desired to see the past. To know what happened in this spot. Who fell in love, became friends, or turned in rage…here, where I stand? This question drives so many, so long. This is why we spend billions of dollars every year in archeology and historians. This is why we place original manuscripts in glass cases, to know, to see, to understand our past.
Jesus knew, He saw, He understands. Did the Father allow Him to see the past as I depicted here? I do not know. Does it matter? I do not know. God knows the answer to those questions, and I trust in Him. I know He watches me now and that I will always follow…and ponder…the footsteps of Jesus.
