Stop Saying Stupid Stuff!
As the world gets darker and darker I find myself getting more and more offended at the stupid things people say. I mean, not ‘make a full blown deal about it’ offended, but just generally sad for the people and their ignorance. Even people who love God. It really is sad on their part, because they don’t realize what they are doing. And it’s a matter of realizing what was said and realizing it was wrong or saying something and not caring and saying it again.
It’s makes me think about what Jesus must have felt on the cross…there were dozens and dozens of people around Him, mocking Him and screaming ‘kill Him!’ watching Him suffer…and STILL, the first thing He thought to say?
‘Father forgive them. They know not what they do.’
Those people then had NO idea what they were saying and doing and they had NO idea who they were saying and doing it to.
Do you all realize what you are saying today? And do you realize who you are saying it to?
We are all children of our God--our bodies are the temple where the Holy Spirit dwells, yet we go around saying garbage out of our mouths all the time. Sometimes on accident, sometimes not. Sometimes to degrade others, sometimes to degrade ourselves. And the whole time all I can imagine is Jesus sitting up in heaven, looking at God, saying:
‘Forgive them Father--they don’t know what they are SAYING.’
Our words have the power to bring life and they have power to take life away. Our own mouths can be mass weapons of destruction. The choice we have every day is a simple one: will we use it for good or for evil? Will we use it to cast life into others? To cast life into ourselves and to any situation we might be in? OR--will we use it to bring death?
Ephesians 4:19 states it very clearly:
“Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth. Say only what helps, each word a gift.”
It goes on to say in the next verse:
“Don't grieve God. Don't break His heart. His Holy Spirit, moving and breathing in you, is the most intimate part of your life, making you fit for Himself. Don't take such a gift for granted.”
How often do we grieve God with what we say? How often do we have Jesus looking at God and asking Him to excuse our words because we couldn’t resist saying something?
I don’t EVER want Jesus to have to look at God and tell Him to ‘forgive Sarah for not watching her mouth--she wasn’t thinking when she said that’. I am the temple where the Holy Spirit dwells. Each word out of my mouth is a gift to bring life--I never want to take this gift for granted. NONE of us can EVER take that gift for granted.
We need to stop acting stupid (meaning foolish and unwise) and start thanking God for His indescribable gift of life that we posses inside of our own mouths--and using it for the benefit of ourselves and others.
In a world slowly dying, we have the keys to life planted inside of us. And it’s time to start unlocking some doors.
