Why would you go anywhere else?

Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name.

¶ Amos 5 : 8

When you need something, where do you go to get it? You would go to the place that has what you need, right? Amos was prophesying that Israel would be going into captivity and he was warning Israel against seeking deliverance from those around them. Amos 5:5 says, "5But seek not Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beersheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nought." The nation of Israel was facing a time of trial and suffering, but their first instinct was to ask those nations around them for help. Another example of someone doing this, on a more personal level, was given to us by Jesus in Luke 8:43-44. The Bible says, "43And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, 44Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched." Notice that she spent everything that she had and couldn’t be healed by anyone, but then she came to Jesus, who she knew could make her whole.

When we have issues in our lives, God doesn’t want to be a last resort. He doesn’t want us to only come to Him once we’ve already exhausted all of our other resources. He wants to be our FIRST resort. He wants us to come to Him with EVERYTHING. When you see the word Lord translated as you see it in today’s verse, all caps, it means that it is the name of God…YAWEH…which means the ALL-MIGHTY. He is Mighty in every situation in your life. Have you ever heard someone say, "God helps those that help themselves"…and there is a Hebrew word that describes that saying. It is "bologna"! God helps those who can’t help themselves. If we could help ourselves, then Jesus wouldn’t have had to die, because we could take care of it ourselves. The truth is, we can’t help ourselves, we must depend on Him. Don’t wait until you have exhausted yourself trying to find the solution. Jesus is the solution. Go to Him first!
